A phobia (from the Greek "Phobos" meaning Fear), is defined as a persistent, abnormal and irrational fear of a specific thing or situation that compels one to avoid it, despite the awareness and reassurance that it is not dangerous.
Phobia statistics indicate that approximately 1 in 23 people suffer from phobias.
That’s nearly 4.25% of the population. There are roughly 11.5 million sufferers in the US and 2.5 million in the UK.
In 2002-3, there were 310 hospital consultant episodes for phobic anxiety disorders in England. 94% required hospital admission. 40% were for men, 60% for women.
Only about 20% of specific phobias disappear on their own for an adult.
Almost everyone has an irrational fear or two. Some of us get nervous at the thought of needles, heights, masks or flying. Others scream at the first sight of a spider or snake. For most people, these fears are minor. But for some, these fears are so severe that they cause tremendous anxiety and interfere with normal day-to-day life. They can erode quality of life and even endanger us.
If you are suffering from a fear or phobia, whether it's the fear of flying, spiders, the dentist, driving, mask's ,public speaking or any other fear or phobia, hypnotherapy can successfully remove your phobia once and for all, letting you lead your life with out the anxiety you are currently experiencing.
A phobia is an intense fear of something that, in reality, poses little or no actual danger. Common phobias and fears include closed-in places, heights, highway driving, flying insects, snakes, and needles. However, we can develop phobias of virtually anything. Most phobias develop in childhood, but they can also develop in adults.
If you have a phobia, you probably realize that your fear is unreasonable, yet you still can’t control your feelings. Just thinking about the thing you fear may make you anxious. And when you’re actually exposed to your phobia, the terror is automatic and overwhelming.
The experience is so nerve-wracking that you may go to great lengths to avoid it – inconveniencing yourself or even changing your lifestyle. If you have claustrophobia, for example, you might turn down a lucrative job offer if you have to ride the elevator to get to the office. If you have a fear of heights, you might drive an extra twenty miles in order to avoid a tall bridge.
